THE RACE TO A HEART
My best student he was
The one who understood
Comprehended all I taught
Or so I thought
However his exam
Handing it in he did not
The rest of my students nonetheless
Submitting theirs they did
And their confidence I attest
Always left me agaze
Because they could not
Beat all the expectation I had
In my best of them all
For that, an assumption it was
Do not choose them they said
My associates I meant
A good book they lamented
Might lack an appropriate cover
I guess the hearing aid
Still left that student my best
Giving my mates no regard
Back to that paper
The exam he submitted not
It pained me I bet
Thus the comparison I kept
Of a race made up
Where my head just messed
Left all the rest Chose to pick the third best
As the first would sweat
Cover the first and second place
Disenchanting it was For now the positions
That of the winning champ
As well as the runners-up
Had no one to take them up
Must be the jitters I guess
Got me thinking I might mess
Failed to put into record
The actual best of the best
I need to revisit
Give me time, give me space
Allowing the medals a new place
By letting in all the rest
Get to mark too their test
For my initial best
To the imaginary quest he did participate
No time for him left
To do and ace my test
